Recovering from Bladder Leakage: Is it possible?
Is it possible to recover from bladder leakage? Not always, however Roy’s story proves that it’s achievable with the right approach and tools. After 18 years of battling incontinence and relying on adult diapers, Roy discovered a life-changing solution—Contino. Now, months later, he is not only managing bladder leakage, but recovering from it, gaining control of his bladder and regaining his confidence.
In our spring newsletter, we shared Roy’s journey on the Sex, Health and Relationships Podcast, hosted by Nurse Continence Advisor Maureen McGrath. If you haven’t listened yet, you can catch up by clicking here.
To recap, on the podcast in May 2024, Roy shared his story of living with incontinence for nearly two decades. With the help of Contino, his life took a remarkable turn, allowing him to rediscover activities he had given up, like endurance horseback riding.
Life Beyond Contino: Recovering from Bladder Leakage
Six months later, we revisited Roy to see how his bladder health has progressed. His story offers hope for those managing incontinence, demonstrating the potential long-term benefits of proactively addressing the condition.
Roy’s continued use of Contino helped strengthen his bladder and pelvic floor muscles, leading to improved overall urinary function while reducing his dependence on the Contino and pads. He now uses Contino only for specific activities, such as long drives or physically demanding days.
Here’s what Roy shared about his progress:
• Improved Control: “My bladder now holds urine better. I can go 3-4 hours without needing to urinate, and my leakage has reduced significantly. He estimates that is overall urinary system functionality is more than 80% when compared to pre surgery functionality.”
• Daily Impact: “For light activities, I often need no pad or just a lighter one. Even during long trips, such as an 18-hour drive to Saskatchewan, my pad remained nearly clean—a big improvement.”
• Managing Setbacks: “If I stop using Contino for extended periods, my bladder sometimes reverts to old habits. But reintroducing it for a few days gets me back on track.”
Roy credits his success to several factors:
• Post-Surgery Recovery: Unlike some patients, Roy did not require radiation therapy, which can damage bladder tissue and sphincter function. This allowed his bladder to maintain healthier tissue after surgery.
• Pelvic Floor Exercises: Regular Kegel exercises contributed to strengthening the muscles supporting his bladder.
• Consistent Use of Contino: The device helped retrain his bladder, improving its elasticity and function over time.
A Testament to Recovery and Resilience
Roy’s journey illustrates that managing incontinence isn’t solely about control and managing leaks in the now — it can also be about rehabilitation and recovery. Clearly Contino’s unique design provides immediate control and, in some cases like Roy’s, fosters long-term improvement, helping men reduce their reliance on devices/pads over time.
However, Contino Care’s holistic approach also had a dramatic contribution to Roy’s overall improved functionality of his urinary system, which lead to overall health improvements. We believe by creating a baseline continence assessment to help Roy and others to develop a deeper understanding how their behaviour, activities and exercise impact their overall condition is key to a successful healthful result of not only his urinary system but general health as well.
It’s important to note that results like Roy’s may not occur in every case. Patients who undergo radiation therapy following prostatectomy, for example, may face additional challenges in achieving similar improvements. For these cases, it’s crucial to focus on regaining control with the assistance of a device like Contino, which can help maximize comfort and improve quality of life in the face of more complex recovery journeys.
For Roy, learning to manage incontinence has significantly enhanced his mental health, social life, and overall quality of life. His story serves as a powerful reminder that with the right tools and support, it’s possible to transition from managing leakage to overcoming it.
For men facing similar challenges, taking the first step toward a solution like Contino could be life-changing.
